A Circle of Trust or a Federation covers a number of services between which certain trust relationships have been established. Namely, this is built when one or more Service Providers agree to trust Identity Providers for authenticating entities.

Among services that can be provided, Identity Federation and Single Sign-On can take place.

The term Circle of Trust comes with the Liberty Alliance approach, while the term Federation comes from the Shibboleth approach.
